Day 6: Friday, 6/17:
Mountain Biking, Boggy Draw near Dolores, CO
This morning we decided to sleep in, relax, do laundry and
take care of some things around the campsite.
Ryan and Andrea also kicked the
soccer ball and Ryan played on the play structure in camp as Sarah learned how
to edit movies in iMovie (Mac). We’ve
been lucky that the weather has been very mild on our trip so far, but today
it’s starting to get hotter. After lunch we headed out to ride our bikes at
Boggy Draw, a neat, forested mountain bike trail that’s close by, but higher in
elevation than where we’re staying and therefore a little cooler. The kids were great, riding 8.8 miles with
about 800 foot elevation gain—all at an elevation over 7500 feet above sea
level. The ride was a nice smooth single-track
loop that was really pretty with only a few technical spots. The funniest thing about this place is the
cows that are grazing here and there near the path. Twice we had to stop because of cows on the
path - first, when a calf was on one side of the path and its mom was on the
other. We didn’t want to get in between
them and make the mother cow get defensive!
Later on the ride, a cow was standing on the path when Sam and Ryan
approached. They got close, thinking
she’d walk away, but she held her ground and stared them down for a while
before finally walking away. This was a
fun ride and both kids did really well. After
returning to camp, we played a few competitive games of foosball (table soccer)
and Spades (cards).
