Day 10: Tues, 6/21: Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO

That cliff is about the size of 2 empire state buildings on top of each other!!!  Painted Wall, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, CO

Day 10:  Tuesday, 6/21:  Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Fly Fishing

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a must see if you’re ever near it.  The Gunnison River has carved a 2300 foot deep sheer cliff along abnarrow canyon.   At the Painted Wall overlook, the canyon is almost 2 empire state buildings tall.  In many places, the canyon is deeper than it is wide.  It’s awesome to see that the opposite edge is closer than the bottom.  It is such a sheer canyon that sunlight only hits the bottom in many places when it is directly overhead—hence the name black canyon.  We had fun driving to about 5 overlooks.  If you come here, you must drive down the East Portal road to the bottom of the canyon to the gold ribbon trout stream/river below.   The road is steep (16% grade) and has hairpin turns with big drop-offs.  We brought our lunch and picnicked along the beautiful river.  Then all 4 of us tried our luck fly-fishing. We had no luck but had fun trying.  Sarah and Andrea took a walk down the river deeper into the incredible canyon and Sam and Ryan kept trying to fish.   A thunder storm started rolling in so we packed up our stuff in the late afternoon and headed back to camp.

East Portal road takes you down to the Gunnison River at bottom of canyon.  Gorgeous and great fishing.
