Day 21: Sat., 7/2: Vallecito Reservoir, CO

Day 21:  Sat., 7/2:  Vallecito Reservoir, CO

We woke up at 7 and it was pretty cold (55 degrees inside the RV) and outside very cloudy/overcast as if it was going to rain.  We drove to Lemon Lake—25 minutes from here.  When we were fishing, it was cold, windy, drizzly, and horrible.  We only fished for about 30 minutes.  Everybody was cold and we were getting our hooks caught on the rocks almost every cast.  So we called it quits without catching anything and drove to Bayfield to get some groceries.  On the way, we saw a beautiful mother deer and 2 of her spotted babies right next to the road.  We saw many other deer along the way.  In the afternoon, it was still raining so we played spades again.  Sam had his fishing pole propped up with a worm on it in the river right by our picnic table under our awning next to the river.  We had just sat down to eat dinner and Sam was taking his first bite when he looked at the fishing pole and saw the tip of it bending down.  With food in his mouth, he ran to get up saying he had a fish on the line.  As he was arriving to the pole, it was pulled towards the river as a large fish was on the line dragging.  He got to the pole just before it was dragged into the water and fought for about 5 minutes reeling in a 24 inch pike!  It was big and putting up a good struggle.  Everybody was excited (especially Sam) because we could see how big he was as he’d swim to the surface and then dive back and run.  When Sam got it next to shore and was trying to net it to get it out of the water, it was too big to fit in the net.  Sam accidentally let in slack in his fishing line and the toothy pike got away at shore’s edge literally at our feet.  We had fun and were very excited reeling it in and trying to get it.  We really wanted to cook it up but it was not to be.   That fish put up more of a fight than any other fish Sam has ever “caught.”

Cold and miserable!
Love the red jacket against the stormy skies and cold.

Mamma duck with duckings 10 feet from us daily in our campsite.
